Childhood for David Goggins was a living nightmare, one that was full of poverty, discrimination, and physical violence. He is the only living person who in his status as a Navy Seal, army ranger and air force tactical controller completed the superb training and went on to break records in various endurance competitions such that outside magazine nicknamed him The Fittest (Real) Man in America. In Can’t Hurt Me, he recounts his incredible life journey expounding that most of us only utilize 40 per cent of what we are capable of. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule and his account provides a blueprint that can be utilized by anyone one in order to overcome discomfort and fear and to achieve their best self.

Popular Highlights In This Book»

Goggins is a kind of inspirational feeling talking about the guy from an abusive childhood and poverty-enduring background rising to become a Navy SEAL, and he's teaching the reader that no matter where you start, life can change if you have the right kind of mindset.

The 40% Rule: This is one of the key principles of the book and simply states that when you think you have nothing left to give and can't possibly go further, you're actually only 40% done. Goggins believes we are capable of pushing far beyond what our mind tells us is possible, and the rule helps build mental resilience.

Accountability Mirror: While Goggins stressed how important it was to be honest with yourself, his tool for that process was the use of his "Accountability Mirror." He wrote down his weaknesses and what he needed improvement upon and stared at them each day to fuel his growth.

Calloused Mindset: Goggins explained how, exactly as our hands have to "callouse" for physical labor, the mind "callouses" by having discomfort and hardships imposed on it repeatedly. It makes us stronger so that we can handle all that life keeps throwing at us.

Limit Stretching: In the book, Goggins pushes himself to unthinkable limits-from ultra-marathons run to three cycles of Navy SEAL Hell Week. His message is clear: the only way to grow is to consistently push yourself beyond your comfort zone.

Overall Book Review»

I recently read Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins, which was indeed a great book that shook me up; it really moved me. Goggins recounts his life in raw honesty and takes us through from troubled childhood into the Navy SEAL and endurance athlete and one of the most mentally toughest individuals you will ever hear about. This book is not just about physical endurance; it is about breaking mental barriers and pushing past the limits we often set for ourselves.

Goggins was raised with poverty, racism, and abuse. His childhood was plagued with the kind of battles that would have broken most people, but what is clear is his relentless drive not to let circumstances define him. In his 20s, Goggins was overweight, a pest exterminator, and had set an end in his job as a dead-end place he thought he had run to. But then he challenged himself in ways that are almost unbelievable to think about.

Perhaps the most appealing portion of the book comes when Goggins successfully undertakes, against all odds, transformations into becoming a Navy SEAL; the hardworking training and extreme physical threats were really inspiring in the reading of his infamous Hell Week and those intense moments that challenge one's limits and how much more he could push through in life.

What I like about Can't Hurt Me is that Goggins does not just speak of his successes but equips people with actionable strategies toward mental toughness. One concept that really stands out to me is his "Accountability Mirror" and how brutally honest you have to be with yourself in relation to where you are and where you want to be. That is one concept that has stuck with me, and I have started applying it in my life too.

This is the book for those who feel stuck and want to do more but don't find time. Goggins teaches you that it's not talent or luck that makes one a rockstar—it's the ability to endure and keep pushing when all seems impossible.

It's a book which I would unhesitatingly suggest to break through self-imposed limitations. It is one of those books which prove life-altering, and you can rest assured that it will be no different.
